What Happens at Your Check-Up?

Regular dental exams and professional cleanings are important because they allow our team to detect any dental issues that may be affecting your health. When you visit our Chaska office twice a year, we’ll ensure that your smile is looking beautiful and functioning just right. Here’s what you can expect:
- Dental Exam. First, we’ll perform an X-ray to see if you have any cavities and to help catch any other issues. We’ll also check your mouth for any signs of oral cancer.
- Plaque & Tartar. During your check up, we’ll also check for plaque (clear, sticky bacteria) and tartar (hardened plaque) on your teeth. This bacteria is important to remove, because it can cause gum disease if it seeps into your gum line, which can eventually lead to tooth loss and other health issues.
- Dental Cleaning. Next, we’ll thoroughly clean your teeth and gums, removing any tartar, polishing your teeth to remove surface stains, and flossing to clear out any debris from under your gum line.
- Advanced Treatment. If we discover a problem during your exam, like a cavity or chipped tooth, we’ll make recommendations for treatment and help you to understand your options. We can then schedule a future appointment to take care of the issue or take care of it on the same day depending on what is required.
Maintaining Oral Health Between Visits
After your visit, it’s important to take care of your smile at home. Beyond regular trips to the dentist, you can play a pivotal role in your own oral health. Some tips to remember between your regular dental check ups include:
- Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each session using a fluoride toothpaste
- Floss your teeth at least once a day to help remove plaque
- Rinse your mouth with mouthwash to remove bacteria and keep your mouth fresh
